The Gut-Skin Axis
Connecting dysbiosis to dermatological conditions like acne, eczema, and rosacea.
The Mechanism
Intestinal permeability ("leaky gut") allows endotoxins (like LPS) to enter systemic circulation, triggering systemic inflammation that often manifests in the skin. Specific strains help repair the gut barrier.
Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)
The strongest data in the gut-skin axis relates to pediatric eczema. Supplementing pregnant mothers and infants with Lactobacillus rhamnosus HN001 or LGG has shown a significant reduction in the cumulative prevalence of eczema over the first few years of life.
Acne and Rosacea
Data here is emerging. Bifidobacterium species and Lactobacillus acidophilus strains are being studied for their ability to reduce systemic IGF-1 and Substance P, both of which drive sebum production and skin inflammation.
